Bruce Lipton
Born October 21, 1944 / Mount Kisco, New York / Developmental Biologist, Author, Lecturer. Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. A stem cell biologist, Best Selling author of The Biology of Belief, and recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace award, he has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences.
Dr. Lipton began his scientific career as a cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville before joining the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine in 1973. In 1982, Dr. Lipton began examining the principles of quantum physics and how they might be integrated into his understanding of the cell’s information processing systems. He produced breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, which revealed that this outer layer of the cell was an organic homolog of a computer chip, the cell’s equivalent of a brain. His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment operating through the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of Epigenetics.
Dr. Lipton’s scientific approach transformed his personal life as well. His deepened understanding of cell biology highlighted the mechanisms by which the mind controls bodily functions and implied the existence of an immortal spirit. It was at this time that he abandoned his lifelong atheism in favor of a belief in God. When applying this science to his personal biology, Lipton discovered that his physical well-being improved and the quality of his daily life was greatly enhanced.
Dr. Lipton has taken his award-winning lectures to the public and is currently a sought-after keynote speaker and workshop presenter. He has been heartened by anecdotal reports from hundreds of former audience members who have improved their spiritual, physical, and mental well-being by applying the principles he discusses in his lectures. He is regarded as one of the leading voices in the new biology.
Dr. Lipton has written several books including the work summarizing his findings entitled The Biology of Belief, Spontaneous Evolution, and his latest book The Honeymoon Effect: The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth.
“We can control our lives by controlling our perceptions.”
Bruce Lipton is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. Most notably known as the bestselling author of The Biology of Belief, Lipton examined the principles of quantum physics producing breakthrough studies on the cell membrane. His research revealed that the environment, operating through the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell turning genes on and off. His discoveries which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study; the science of epigenetics. Throughout his career Bruce Lipton has highlighted the mechanisms by which the mind controls bodily functions, and implied the existence of an immortal spirit.
Today on Luminosity we’re diving into Bruce Lipton’s deepened understanding of cell biology and the application of this into our own lives through the teaching: “We can control our lives by controlling our perceptions.” Our perceptions, as we’ll delve into in this article, are no small feat and they are something to be taken seriously. They control our bodies and our minds, and in turn immeasurably shape our lives.
According to Oxford Dictionary (ref 1) a Perception is the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses, or the way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted. A Belief is an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof, and a trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something. In the mind, a perception precedes a belief and this is where Bruce Lipton comes into the equation with his studies on the ways in which these beliefs manifest in our cell biology – the literal “Biology of Belief”.
Rather than the obvious assumption that we need only to think ‘good thoughts’ and only acknowledge ‘positive feelings and emotions’ the truth is that in doing so we only sidestep what is computing in our psychey – it’s straight up spiritual bypass! The ghouls of our mind still remain, only coming out to then bite us when we’re feeling most tired, weak or vulnerable. The work truly lies in deconditioning the maladaptive beliefs and perceptions we have picked up along the way that cause the ghouls to unleash themselves.
One of the greatest journeys that the modern-day spiritual seeker is being called on in this time is to decondition. In order to embody the truest essence of all that we are we must become consciously aware of the ways in which we are playing out our lives on autoplay. How we’re functioning through the coding of beliefs which do not serve the grandest vision of ourselves, that is; the immortal pure loving soul we innately are in spite of our human feebles and humdrum of everyday life.
Say for example you may find that something played a huge role in your imprisonment, but it was kept in its place and given value because society supported it. Such as being complimented for being pretty or beautiful and in the process learning that you’re only loveable when you look good on the outside. As a result of these ‘learnings’ – this perception – they become beliefs whereby every step in your life becomes a strive towards keeping up an image of how you think you are to be seen in the world and what you have to do in order to attain love. But that’s not the truth. The truth is that you are already loved intensely, immeasurably, and infinitely. And if we believe this, we become this.
How does this work? It works by the law of energy known as Quantum Physics. Quantum physicists have revealed that underneath the apparent physical structure there is nothing but energy. We are energy beings interacting with everything in the entire energetic field. Rather than focusing on matter, in a quantum world the focus is on energy and a world where we are connected to and entangled in an unfathomable number of energy vibrations. Quantum physics understands the holistic thinking that everything is one whole, not fragmented pieces, and that each thing influences the other.
Our thoughts, too, are part of the energy field just as is the energy from every other living organism and also non-living things (even these give off energy). As we are neurologically processing the world around us, i.e. thinking our thoughts and going about our lives, we are creating a magnetic vibration like a tuning fork that emanates from our head out into the field. From this we can recognize how powerful we are. Quantum Physics takes us from victim to creator; to powerful beings creating and unfolding the lives we lead.
To leverage the law of Quantum Physics we need to blow the dust off the surface and take a look at the beliefs we are hoarding in the crevices of our mind. We need to stop being a radio signal for ‘bad juju’ and dissolve anything that is a disservice to our grandest selves. It’s an unravelling and unwinding process to the initial trigger – the raw nerve if you will.
The thought that makes us twinge and cringe the most is rooted in the belief we’re holding that doesn’t serve the most magnificent version of ourselves. It’s the thought that feels deeply pure, deeply honest, yet also all too familiar, it’s the one that is most true to how we are feeling – even if it comes with a dose of ugly. Our deepest thoughts often are the most ugly – these are the sponsoring thoughts to how we act and feel each day. They’re the authority at the top of the food chain and they flow downstream sometimes manifesting themselves as maladaptive, self-defeating behaviors.
This unravelling and unwinding process to the initial trigger – the initial belief – can take form in a conversation with a dear friend, someone you trust implicitly, or through a journalling session if that feels more comfortable. Asking yourself some of the following questions can facilitate getting to the core: How does this make me feel? When did I pick this up? Who did I learn this from? Often our subconscious will take us straight to the answer if we’re relaxed enough the allow the feelings, memories and images rise up to the surface. The thoughts and words that have the most emotion around them – the most energy – are the triggers. The triggers are the ones that are most heightened and may cause a physical reaction such as a skip in the breath or a frog in the throat. These are the beliefs at the root conducting all things in our lives be it good, bad, great or ugly.
Reviewing our beliefs, while sometimes very painful, results in us taking a deep dive and excavating what is at the core rather than slapping a band aid on our wounds. It’s not easy, however the effort you put into it usually equates to its value you reap. After reviewing our beliefs we then have the opportunity to think our own thoughts, and this, is a sublime freedom.
